Tuesday 18.6.2019. Reddish Vale Country Park.

Plenty of activity on the lower lake today (18.6.2019) with the Great Crested Grebes feeding their babies.
the Kingfishers were in attendance on the small lake and the top lake too.
Lots of Squirrels around too.

Family enjopying the sun.

Stretching his wings.

Baby struggling with a fish.

OMG its pulled him under

He really is the runt of the brood.

At last he's got it under control.

Dad you will have to bring smaller fish that the kids can manage.

Kingfishers on the top lake.

Finished another jigsaw yesterday and thought is was so nice I thought I'd frame it, so bought some Ravenburger Puzzle Conserver from Amazon.

Says it does 4 x 1000 jigsaws, but wondering how to use it

Found this on the side of the canister, the rest was in German, but good old YouTube to the rescue again, what did we do before that!

That's all for today folks, hope you enjoy the pictures.

Sunday 16.6.2019.

Great day yesterday at Reddish Vale Country Park.
Saw the Great Crested Grebes with the babies on her back and Dad providing well with fish for the youngsters, a bit smaller than the day before in the prior post.

Where are we going Mum?.

Another sightseer!.

Is this a better size Mother?.

Who's a lucky babe then!

Perhaps a minnow would be better next time.

Proof there are 5 babies when mum stretched and flapped her wings and all the babies fell off.

Afterwards went round to the smaller lake where I was told the Kingfishers were very active, and met a couple of fellow photographers, well one the other was hiding in the undergrowth!.
Put the phone away Malcolm!.

After the two lads left I had the viewing to myself.
The information I'd got was quite right and I'm not sure how many there was as they don't have name tabs on!.
On the island in the middle of the small lake.

This looks like a chubby baby to me ?,

This shrub on the island in the middle of the lake seemed to be a favourite perch for them all.

Then off to dinner with the family to finish off a good day, only downside had to leave Pepe at home but had some chicken in a doggie bag to bring home for his dinner so all was forgiven (I think).

His leg, I posted about last time is now better and called in to the Vets today to settle the bill which wasn't as big as I thought! which was a pleasant surprise!.

I've tried to overcome his leg problems in the future by building him a set of steps which are a bit better than the footstool he had before.
A  bit unsure at first but a bit of chicken at the top soon overcame his fear.

I know I have to tidy up the sides yet.

King of all he surveys!.

Used this spray on adhesive to stick the carpet on the steps and it turned out to be very good.

That's all for now folks

This past week, 10-15.6.2019.

Pepe had a lame front leg this past week but the vet said he had sprained it and gave him some tablets which seem to have done the trick and he's now back to normal and walking alright again.
Down Reddish Vale Country Park today was a bit overcast and damp but forgot all that when I noticed the Great Crested Grebes had finally produced their babies!.

Can just see two babies heads here but there were three that I saw.
A lady later said she had counted four but wasn't sure, no doubt we will see over the next couple of days.

The babies ride on the parents backs and don't seem to bother which one, though Dad is usually away fishing as it takes a lot of fish to feed all the babies and themselves!.

Don't know what a Great Crested grebe looks like did I hear you say, here is one I took earlier!.

Here you can see father being a bit over zealous with the size of the babies dinner

They were behind the bushes but you can see the size of the fish against the size of this babies head.

So not a bad day really, and then a walk up to the tearooms for lunch for which the rain held off

Other babies in the park still doing well.

Goslings.

Younger Goslings

Cute at this age hey.

Baby Mallards

More baby Mallards

Swans eggs, you could make a fair size omelette with one of these hey.
Mum just off to stretch  her legs and get something to eat.
Can't be long hatching now seems to have been ages, she must be thinking that too!.

That's it for another wet week, but what more can you expect in Manchester, "The Rainy City"

Thursday ,6.6.2019,

First thing Thursday was a trip to Lydl supermarket to get one of the Thursday bargains a Rucksack seat which I'd seen at different outlets at anything from £20 to £45, Lydl's price £9.99!

Quite sturdy and not too heavy, remembering you have to put stuff in it!.

Then it was off to Reddish vale for a bit of twitching, that's bird watching if you didn't know!,.
Who did we met there my Friends Bob and Joyce so we had a nice walk round in the sun and Joyce had her treat of walking a dog, not any old dog but her favourite Pepe!.

We didn't spot much as we were too busy talking, then after they left Pepe and I went up to the Tearooms and had lunch.

Pepe likes it there, more the sausages I should say.
But a nice sit in the sun and as I've said before, the benefits of being deaf is you can turn your hearing aids off, the kids do get a bit noisy or is it me getting older?.

Then back to the lakes  and came upon this nice Jay which I don't think he was expecting as they are usually a bit on the shy side.

Not facing you as you crept up on me, I didn't mind as you usually only get their side view and not this of their different colours from the back.

Next was this juvenile Crow who was hopping along the path , didn't seem to be able to fly but its parents were calling it so left it to them, it was probably tired and after a while be be able to join them.

The young Goslings are doing well, there are 3 in this brood, one was a bit of a straggler.

A couple of unwelcome ones here, but its live and let live isn't it?.

This is a whopper isn't it.

Busy Bee!.

On returning home there on my Niger feeder were the Goldfinches, first ones I've had in 50 years here and still coming back this last couple of weeks

Then couldn't believe my eyes there was a couple of youngsters.
As you can see they don't have the red faces as youngsters.

No red face but still have the bright yellow wing patches.

Gives a whole new meaning to Mother and Child hey.

Not too bad since I snapped them though the living room window, if nothing else made me go out later and wash the windows!!.

So another first "Baby Goldfinches".
